I have always been fascinated with coins. I like their various sizes and colors. I like to see the design changes over the years. I like the way the cool metal feels in my hands. I like the sound coins make when they clink together. I like the weight of them in my pocket or in my purse (to an extent). I like to find them in the dryer on laundry day! I like to pick them up when I find them on the ground. I like that, though they are small, they have value and significance.
Over the years, as I have come across old and unique coins, I have saved them. My collection is small and simple but it is something that I enjoy. The oldest coin that I own is a penny from 1918. That coin is nearly 100 years old! It is dented and tarnished so it is not worth much but I like to think about the places it has been and the lives that it has touched along the way. I can imagine a young child standing at a candy counter with that penny in hand. I can imagine a mother, counting out her pennies to pay for groceries for her family. I can imagine a father, saving his pennies to surprise his family with something special on Christmas morning. So when I hold my little 1918 penny in my hand, I am not only holding a piece of metal, I am holding a piece of history!
