Same Product, Different Backgrounds

Leather Journals

When I photographed my husband's leather journal and hand turned wooden pen, I started with a rustic looking wooden base which suits the subject matter perfectly. Next, I added a lighter wood panel for the background. It looked great sitting in the SHOTBOX but when I took my pictures, the contrast between the dark journal and the light wood was just too much. The result was a washed out looking journal and a disappearing background. Not the look I was going for! So I tried a burnt orange placemat for my background and it worked perfectly! The journal stands out against the orange and the imperfections and character in the leather are more prominent. It is amazing the difference that the right backdrop can make!
