Octagonal Math Slider

Yesterday, my son and I spent some time making a few origami octagons that slide together to make a ninja star (see my Paper Ninja Star Tutorial). As we were playing around with them, we realized that they would be a great tool for practicing multiplication tables! You simply write the equation on the main part of the octagon and the answer on the tab that sticks out when you slide that portion of the octagon. So easy but a fun way to practice your math facts! Of course this could also be done with addition, subtraction, division, fractions converted to decimals or whatever math facts you are studying. It could also be used in other subjects. If your questions and answers can be written in the given space, this makes a great study tool! These octagons are easy enough to make that you could have each student make one or two and then you, the teacher or parent, would have quite a few octagons to work with. Any time you add an element of fun to the study process, it helps the kids to be more engaged and this little octagonal slider certainly is fun!
